The Daisies finished their insect exploration by releasing butterflies this week. The students started by placing their own caterpillars in tiny cups. Mushy food was added to the bottom and the munching of "very hungry" caterpillars began! The children watched the tiny creatures eat everyday and they got bigger and bigger until........Finally, the images of upside down chrysalises could be seen shaking and shimmering in preparation for their metamorphosis. The students were able to see the butterflies emerge and flap their wings as the color came out. The new butterflies drank sugar water until they were strong enough to fly free. Goodbye butterflies, we will miss you! With spring finally upon us, The Daisies' class welcomed some crawly critters into our space. The children explored Red Wiggler Worms, Meal Worms, Wax Worms and Blue Horned Caterpillars. They even touched a Hissing Madagascar Cockroach! The students used magnifying glasses, sticks, measuring tape, and their own eyes and hands to become little scientists. The class decided to draw their own bugs using white boards and markers. Later, they created realistic bugs using model magic, pipe cleaners, pom-poms and other art materials. The Daisies are continuing to learn more about insects in our environment. We've only just begun...
The Daisies had their final Art Farm class with Gabby. There were cheers of delight as she introduced many interesting six legged creatures. The students met Woody the Walking Stick, Betsy the Bess Beetle and Grape the Blue Beetle. There was even a green grasshopper named Jumpy! We learned so many wonderful facts about other living things who share our world. Even though the class was a little sad, the children are looking forward to seeing Gabby in September!
On March 2, 2018 the "one and only" Cat in the Hat came to visit the Daisies classroom. He read "Mister Brown Can Moo, Can You?" in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. The students were able to talk with the cat, try on his special hat and some even shared a daisy flower for good cheer. When the cat's time was done, he packed up his bag, turned on his tail and said, "that is that" and then he was gone with a tip of his hat!"
The Daisies welcomed their VIP's on Friday, February 2, 2018. We started the visit by decorating baking aprons with foam stickers. To celebrate our color week, the students made special white glitter play-dough to share with their guests. Big and little hands, "rolled", "patted", and "marked" the dough with letters from their names. When clean up was done, everyone joined on the rug for the song "Down Around the Corner at the Bakery Shop". The special guests said good-bye and hugs and kisses were shared by all. Thank you for coming and making VIP Day such a success! |
